Current Volunteer Opportunities

The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area non-profit organizations and other organizations required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation status. The following organizations need volunteers. For details about these and other volunteer opportunities, contact The Volunteer Center, 90 N. ACCESS, Inc.: Volunteers needed to spend time with children of all ages with various activities such as reading, painting, field trips, etc. Minimum age: 16.

Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority: Volunteer Community Resource Assistants needed 4 hours or less per month/flexible days and times to meet with low-income parents and/or their mentors in a public place. Volunteers will help low-income parents and/or their mentors to develop specific resources/knowledge necessary for their move out of poverty. Minimum age: 21.

AkronReads (Akron Public Schools): Volunteers needed to tutor students grades K-4 throughout the school year. Minimum age: 18 and a high school graduate.

American Heart Association: Volunteers needed 7 a.m. – 12 p.m., Saturday, October 9 to assist with the annual Start! Heart Walk. Minimum age: 16.

Ardmore, Inc.: Volunteers needed 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. weekdays to assist adult mental retardation clients take part in activities such as puzzles, playing pool, shooting hoops, reading, computers, gardening, and arts & crafts. Minimum age: 18, 12 with adult supervision.

Battered Women’s Shelter: Volunteers needed on an as needed basis to assist with delivering donations, fundraising and office/clerical needs. Minimum age: 18.

CYO and Community Services: Volunteers needed two Saturdays a month to help with Recreational Respite program activities, such as swimming, arts & crafts, cooking and games. Minimum age: 16, 13 with adult supervision.

Goodwill Industries of Akron: Volunteers needed to assist in the retail stores, weekday mornings, afternoons, evenings and Saturdays mornings. Minimum age: 14, 12 with adult supervision.

Greater East Ohio Area Alzheimer’s Association: Volunteers needed October 2 between 6:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. to assist with the Memory Walk. Minimum age: 17, 16 with adult supervision.

Habitat for Humanity of Summit County: Volunteers needed 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays to assist at retail ReStore. Minimum age: 14.

Hattie Larlham Supported Living: Volunteers needed to complete small home improvements to a home(s) for people with developmental disabilities. Flexible days/times. Minimum age: 18.

Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio: Volunteers needed weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. to provide office assistance. Minimum age: 16.

Mothers Assisting Mothers: Volunteers needed between 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays to count and organize donated clothing and gift items. Minimum age: 18, 17 with adult supervision.

National MS Society: Volunteers needed from 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Tuesdays to assist with craft classes. Minimum age: 18.

Paws and Prayers: Volunteers needed Saturdays & Sundays for 3-5 hours starting at 11 a.m. to help find a dog his or her fur-ever home during Adoption events. Minimum age: 18, 16 with adult supervision.

Road Runner Akron Marathon: Volunteers needed 4-6 hours between hours of 5:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Race Day, Saturday, September 25 to help with needs throughout the Marathon course. Minimum age: 14, 12 with adult supervision.

Rockynol Retirement Community: Volunteers needed 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and/or 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays to greet and direct visitors to residents’ rooms. Minimum age: 18.

Second 8th Week World Wide Apostolic Assemblies—Ohio: Volunteers needed between 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. weekdays to assist with typing, cleaning, repairing sound equipment, painting, and assist with distributing literature throughout the church neighborhood. Minimum age: 20.

Senior Independence Hospice: Volunteers needed at least 2 hours per week any day of the week to provide companionship and emotional support to patients. Minimum age: 18.

YMCA Lake Anna: Volunteers needed 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. weekdays, minimum of 2 hours a week, to assist with housekeeping duties including vacuuming, mopping, dusting, trash removal, and cleaning windows and glass. Minimum age: 16.

YMCA Voris Community Learning Center: Volunteers needed 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. weekdays to assist with office/clerical activities two hours per week/two hours overall per month. Minimum age: 18.
