Current Volunteer Opportunities

The United Way of Summit County Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to area non-profit organizations and other organizations required to incorporate volunteer programs for accreditation status. The following organizations need volunteers. For details about these and other volunteer opportunities, contact The Volunteer Center, 90 N. ACCESS, Inc.: Volunteers needed to spend time with children of all ages with various activities such as reading, painting, field trips, etc. Minimum age: 16.

Arc of Summit & Portage Counties: Volunteers needed to assist staff with coordinating special events. Minimum age: 18.

Cascade Locks Park Association: Volunteers needed between 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays to welcome visitors to the Mustill Store. Minimum age: 18, younger with supervision.

Catholic Social Services of Summit County (CYO and Community Services): Volunteers needed between 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. weekdays to assist with mailings and filings. Minimum age: 16.

City of Akron Recreation Bureau: Volunteers needed between the hours of 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. April 23-25 to assist during the “King James Shooting Star Classic.” Minimum age: 18, 15 with adult supervision.

Community Builders Cascade Village Community: Volunteers needed once a week for one hour a week to hold exercise classes between the hours of 4 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. for housing community residents. Exercise classes seeking volunteers include Martial Arts/Karate, Aerobics, and Kickboxing. Minimum age: 18.

CYO and Community Services: Volunteers needed two Saturdays a month to help with Recreational Respite program activities, such as swimming, arts & crafts, cooking and games. Minimum age: 16, 13 with adult supervision.

Habitat for Humanity of Summit County: Volunteers needed 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays to assist at retail ReStore. Minimum age: 16.

Jewish Family Service: Mature adult volunteers needed 2 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Mondays - Thursdays to assist with reception and administrative tasks, including answering phones, greeting clients, and sorting mail. Minimum age: 55.

Keep Akron Beautiful: Volunteers needed for annual “Clean up Akron Week,” April 18-24, 2010; Super Saturday, April 24. Minimum age is 18, younger with adult supervision and waiver.

March of Dimes: Volunteers needed 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8 to assist in various areas during the March for Babies event. Minimum age: 15.

Metro Parks, Serving Summit County: Volunteers needed Tuesdays-Sundays for a minimum of 1 hour per week to feed and care for the animals at the Nature Realm and/or serve as a guide to direct visitors through animal exhibit area. Individuals and families welcome. Minimum age: 16.

National Youth Advocate Program: Volunteers needed to join Parent Advocate Connections, a volunteer program that pairs experienced adults as mentors to parents who have come in contact with the child welfare system. Must be able to commit at least 6 months to this opportunity. Minimum age: 21.

OPEN M: Volunteers needed 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays to assist with female mentoring program (Diamond Learning mentoring program). Volunteers must be willing to mentor a girl (ages 12-17) in the program. Minimum age: 18.

Rape Crisis Center of Summit & Medina Counties: Volunteers needed to provide hotline support to survivors and co-survivors of sexual assault. Minimum age: 18.

Rockynol Retirement Community: Volunteers needed 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and/or 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays to greet and direct visitors to residents’ rooms. Minimum age: 18.

Ronald McDonald House: Volunteers needed any day of the week every other week to assist with cooking, cleaning, and some office work. Minimum age: 18, 14 with adult supervision.

Salvation Army of Summit County: Volunteers needed 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. weekdays to assist with agency maintenance and repairs. Minimum age: 18.

Senior Independence Hospice: Volunteers needed at least 2 hours per week any day of the week to provide companionship and emotional support to patients. Minimum age: 18.

Summa’s Palliative Care & Hospice Services: Volunteers needed to help with making supportive phone calls to families who have lost loved ones. Minimum age: 21.

Williard Food Pantry: Volunteers needed 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. the second Monday of each month to assist with food pick-up/unloading. Minimum age: 18, 16 with parent permission.

YMCA-Voris Community Learning Center: Volunteers needed 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. weekdays to assist with office/clerical activities two hours per week/two hours overall per month. Minimum age: 18.
