Purpose of The Women’s
Leadership Giving Society
The Women’s Leadership Giving
Society (WLGS) was organized by United Way
women in 1998 as a celebration of the power of women to bring about
positive change in our community through philanthropy and service. It specifically promotes initiatives that support women and children in
Summit County. The goal of The
Women’s Leadership Giving Society is to educate, energize and empower women
to impact and enrich our community in these important areas.
Membership Eligibility
Women philanthropists, giving at the leadership level of $1000 and above (individually
or combined with their spouse), are automatically a welcome member of The
Women’s Leadership Giving Society. Join Now
Power of the Purse Luncheon
The Women’s Leadership Giving
Society's most visible event is an annual luncheon that is held each
July. The "Power of the Purse" luncheon has featured wonderful and
inspiring keynote speakers like Ann Brennan and Vanita Oelschlager.
It is also at this annual luncheon that the Women Philanthropist of the
Year Award is presented.

The Women’s Leadership Giving
Society honors women in Summit County by annually selecting the
recipient of and presenting the Women
Philanthropist of the Year Award.

Born Learning
The Women’s
Leadership Giving Society brought United Way of
America’s Born Learning
program to Summit County.
Born Learning
is a public engagement campaign to help parents, caregivers and communities
create early learning opportunities for young children. It is built on
awareness, education and action. Educational materials, public service
advertising and a content rich website
give parents, grandparents and other caregivers easy, “doable” action steps
to help young children learn.

The
Women’s Leadership Giving Society provides women an opportunity to:
- Network and form new partnerships with area women business and
community leaders while working together to enhance the lives of others.
- Participate in The
Women’s Leadership Giving Society Power of the Purse Luncheon.
- The opportunity to join the Women's
Leadership Council and be involved with special volunteer
events and planning committees.
- Increase the value of women’s philanthropy in Summit County.

Involved?
Join the Women’s
Leadership Council
The Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) is the active arm of the
WLGS. As a member of the WLC, you have the
opportunity to get 'hands-on' with volunteer projects, planning
committees and mentoring young women about the importance of
community involvement. The Council specifically supports
initiatives involving women and children in Summit County,
especially early childhood development.
All members of the Women's Leadership Giving Society are encouraged
to become an active member of the WLC. Committee opportunities
include:
Born Learning Program Committee
The
WLC creates public awareness of this national program to educate
parents and caregivers about the importance of early childhood
development to a child's success.
Philanthropic/Service
Project Committee
A year-long service project providing needed items and volunteer
service to a community agency involved with women and children. The
WLC members also conduct various fund raisers to meet the agency’s
specific needs such as clothing, books, toy, or school supplies.
In 2009, the WLC
adopted the Harvest Home as their special project for the
year and provided bedding, sundries, and packaged birthday parties
in boxes for the residents, and also volunteered their time. They
participate annually in the United Way of Summit County's Day of
Action, this year painting and gardening at ACCESS.
Power of the Purse
Planning Committee
The WLGS annual luncheon brings together area professional women and
community philanthropists, highlighted with an inspiring woman
keynote speaker; and also honors the recipient of the Women
Philanthropist of the Year award.
Mentoring Program Committee
An inspirational program for young women to instill and cultivate a
philanthropic spirit that will evolve into a lifetime of community
service through personal giving, advocating, and volunteering
Membership Committee
Educate prospective members about the purpose of the WLGS, and
activities and community involvement of WLC.
